What is Live-in Care and Who is it Right For?

08/04/2026

Live-in care is often considered the "gold standard" of support because it allows individuals to remain in their own homes while receiving 24-hour assistance. It’s a great alternative to residential care as it involves a professional caregiver residing in the client’s home to provide round-the-clock support.

This arrangement allows those who are unable to live independently to remain in familiar surroundings while receiving assistance with personal care, medication management, mobility and household tasks. Unlike traditional hourly home care, a live-in carer is a constant presence, offering both physical assistance and vital companionship.

How does live-in care work?

Live-in care allows individuals to remain in the comfort of their own home while receiving dedicated one-to-one support from a trained care professional who lives with them. The service is designed around each person’s daily routine, preferences and level of support required, ensuring care feels natural and respectful of their independence. Carers provide help with personal care, mobility, meal preparation, medication reminders and companionship, offering reassurance throughout the day and night. Carers will be carefully matched to each individual and will develop a personalised care plan to ensure their client can continue to live safely and comfortably in familiar surroundings.

What are the benefits of live-in care?

Independence
Having a live-in carer allows the client to remain in their own home and retain some independence in terms of being in the surroundings of their choosing.

Alternative to residential care
While residential care is the right option for some, for others, staying in their own home is the priority and live-in care allows them to do that whilst still getting all the care and support they need.

Round-the-clock support
A live-in carer actually lives in the house with the client, meaning they are on hand 24-7 to give round-the-clock support as needed.

One-to-one care
Unlike a care home, where there may be a high staff-to-resident ratio, the client has the carer’s undivided focus, resulting in dedicated care at all times.

Safety and peace of mind
For families, knowing a professional caregiver is on-hand 24-7 to manage emergencies or prevent falls is invaluable and provides complete peace of mind that other care options cannot.

Holistic wellbeing
Enabling clients to stay at home surrounded by their own things, memories, pets and gardens significantly improves long-term health outcomes and emotional stability. It also enables clients to avoid the upheaval of moving to a residential care facility which can be traumatic, sometimes leading to a decline in mental health.

Companionship
A live-in carer isn't just there for medical tasks; they also provide meaningful companionship. Whether it's doing a crossword together or watching a favourite TV programme, having someone to talk to and share thoughts with improves mental health significantly.

Improved health outcomes
Research often shows that people receiving care at home have better long-term health results such as reduced infection risk, better nutrition and a reduced risk of falls as the carer is always around. Furthermore, the consistency of having the same one or two carers means they get to know your "baseline" health perfectly, making them much quicker to spot if you are becoming unwell.

How does live-in care help?
  • Continuity of lifestyle
Remaining in their own environment ensures familiarity for clients and the ability to continue their daily routine for the most part.

  • Avoid transfer trauma
For many individuals, physically moving to a facility can trigger a rapid decline in health known as Relocation Stress Syndrome; live-in care helps by eliminating the need for a move entirely.

  • One-to-one focused attention
The dedicated attention a live-in carer provides can help with preventative care as the carer knows the client’s “normal” state, and loneliness as the carer becomes a companion.

  • Great for couples
Live-in care is particularly helpful for couples who wish to stay together in their marital home but have different care needs; a live-in carer can support both individuals.

  • Peace of mind for families
For relatives, having a live-in carer helps by removing the guilt and stress of managing care themselves or worrying about a loved one being alone.

FAQs

What exactly does a live-in carer do?

Our live-in carers provide comprehensive 24/7 support tailored to the individual. This typically includes:

Personal care: Bathing, dressing and toileting.
Health management: Medication reminders and mobility assistance.
Housekeeping: Cooking meals, light cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping.
Companionship: Social interaction, accompanying the client to appointments, or simply sharing a cup of tea.

Does the carer need their own room?

Yes. Because the carer lives in the home, they require a private, furnished bedroom to ensure they have a space to rest and maintain their own privacy. While a private bathroom is not compulsory, they should have access to clean facilities and a place to store their belongings.

Will I have the same person all the time?

Care is usually provided by a small, consistent team of two carers who work on a rotational basis (for example, two weeks on, two weeks off). This ensures the client always sees a familiar face, while allowing the carers to rest and avoid burnout.

Is live-in care more expensive than a care home?

Surprisingly, it is often comparable in cost to a high-quality residential care home. For couples, live-in care is almost always significantly cheaper because the cost is for the carer’s time rather than "per bed," allowing two people to stay together for a similar price to one.

Can a live-in carer help with complex conditions like dementia?

Yes. Many of our live-in carers are specifically trained in condition-led care, which includes dementia, Parkinson’s, stroke recovery, and palliative (end-of-life) care. Because they are in a 1:1 environment, they can manage the behavioral changes or specific medical needs of these conditions more effectively than in a residential facility.

What happens when the carer takes a break?

Carers are entitled to daily breaks (usually 2 hours per day). Depending on the client's safety needs, the family might step in during this time, or we can arrange cover to ensure the client is never left alone, especially if they are at high risk of falling.

How do you match carers to clients?

We believe that great care starts with a great relationship. Our matching process goes far beyond clinical requirements; we look for similarities in personality, lifestyle and temperament. We hand-pick a carer who shares the client’s interests, ensuring the support feels less like a service and more like a natural extension of their daily life, preserving independence and comfort.
